These delicious Homemade Graham Crackers are easy to make and are a great snack for school lunches or road trips!

As I’m sitting here writing this in the wee hours of the morning, I’m sipping my black coffee and eating a Homemade Graham Cracker. It takes me back to 2 ½ months ago when I was recovering in the hospital after having our second son, Luke. This is when I developed a graham cracker obsession…

The hospital gave me little graham cracker packets with peanut butter as a snack in between meals and to make sure I had something in my belly when I had to take medication. It had been a long time since I had eaten graham crackers and I forgot how much I loved them…actually, perhaps I didn’t know how much I loved them until this hospital stay.

Upon our return home, graham crackers stayed on my mind. I had my husband buy me a box. And another box. And another. I became ravenous due to nursing my son and endless graham crackers were all that I wanted.

My husband went to Costco and sent me a picture of a box of graham crackers to see if I wanted them due to the better price. I, obviously, said yes. It turned out that the “box” he bought was actually a big box with a bunch of graham cracker boxes inside it. “Well, I guess I have no other choice but to eat all of these myself,” I thought as my then two-year-old begged me for some of the crackers.

It was when I finished eating all the graham crackers inside each of the boxes within the big box that I realized I had what might be a graham cracker problem.

“Maybe these aren’t that great for me,” I said to myself. “Maybe I should try making a healthier version instead.” Also, “Maybe I need to work on sharing food with my kid.” Fun Fact: I have a ridiculously hard time sharing my food, even with my child.

Well, I finally did it. I made my own graham crackers! And I even shared some with Toddler Ty!

Now, these Homemade Graham Crackers don’t taste exactly like real graham crackers because they are healthier, but they are still crunchy and sweet and oh, so satisfying!

We will be bringing these Homemade Graham Crackers with us on our upcoming road trip to Palm Desert and San Diego as a snack in the car. My toddler loves these crackers, so it will be an easy, mess-free snack for him!

Graham Cracker Possibilities:

• These would make a lovely holiday gift if you wrapped them with parchment paper and twine!
• Bring them to a holiday party (if those are still a thing)!
• Pack them in your little ones’ lunch boxes – they are nut-free!
• Bring them on a road trip like we are doing.
• DO NOT eat them obsessively like I do.

Variations/Add-Ons:

• Add 1 tablespoon of chia seeds for some added protein, omegas, and fiber! They add a speckle of pop to the crackers, too.
• I got my sunflower oil from Trader Joe’s, but if you don’t have any, you can try replacing it with another vegetable oil or with coconut oil. I’ve also linked some sunflower oil from Amazon here for you. If you end up using coconut oil, like I did in my first batch, it does make the graham crackers have a slight coconuty flavor.
• If you want to reduce the sugar in these crackers, you can reduce the honey to 2 tablespoons and they will still turn out slightly sweet.
• Add some peanut butter or almond butter on top when you’re eating these graham crackers for a more filling snack! Or, top them with a bit of Nutella (another obsession of mine)….;)

Ingredients
• ¼ cup sunflower oil
• 1 egg
• ¼ cup water
• 3 tablespoons honey
• 2 ¼ cups whole wheat flour
• ½ cup coconut sugar
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 2 teaspoons cinnamon
• ½ teaspoon salt
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. In a small bowl, whisk together sunflower oil, egg, water, and honey. Set aside.
3. In a medium bowl, mix flour, coconut sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt together.
4. Pour wet ingredients into the dry and mix well so that a dough forms.
5. Place a large piece of parchment paper on top of a large cutting board. Place dough on top.
6. Slice dough in half and start spreading it out with your fingers slightly.
7. Place another large piece of parchment paper on top of the dough and using a rolling pin, roll the dough out so that it is fairly thin.
8. Shape the dough into a rectangle (if you want perfect looking shaped graham crackers) and slice into smaller rectangles to form your crackers.
9. Pierce each cracker with a fork several times.
10. Slide the parchment paper with the graham crackers on top onto a baking sheet.
11. Repeat this process with the remaining dough.
12. Bake in the oven for approximately 16 minutes or until graham crackers are mostly browned. You don’t want to under cook these because they will be too soft.
Notes
If you find that the dough is too sticky, simply add more flour.[br]*Note: Affiliate links are included in this blog post, which means I receive a small commission if you purchase the item (at no extra cost to you!) and it helps me keep this blog running!
